The black and white dress has always been a favourite of the stars, perhaps one of the most famous being the stunning creation by Valentino worn by Julia Roberts at the 73rd Academy Awards when accepting the Oscar for her performance as Erin Brockovich. The dress made such an impact that, in a poll conducted by Debenhams published in the Daily Telegraph, it was voted the third most iconic red-carpet dress of all time. Valentino who has dressed countless stars said that watching Julia Roberts wearing his black column gown with white piping made him ‘so excited’ and stated that it was the high point of his career.
Watch out for monochrome influencing fashion in a big way in 2011/12. From the Sugababes to Cheryl Cole, black and white is popping up everywhere. Expect lots on the high street as it’s such a simple, effortlessly classic look to pull off. It will never fail to draw attention if put together well. The beauty of the black and white dress is that long after lime greens and fuschia pinks have been sent off to the charity shop, it will still be going strong year after year, rightly earning its place in the savvy shopper’s capsule wardrobe. Accessorising a black and white dress couldn’t be easier too. A simple splash of colour, say in a necklace, clutch bag or shoes, completes the look, though be careful not to go overboard.
Whatever the season, whatever the year, whatever the occasion, a black and white dress is guaranteed chic and should form an essential part of any stylish woman’s wardrobe.
